Environmental Responsibility: Plan, action and change
example answers
We have used the Theatre Green Book’s Sustainable Productions toolkit (Baseline standards) to identify 4 key areas where we can reduce our environmental impact. These are:
1. Make sure at least 50% of all materials come from reused or recycled sources
2. Make sure 65% of them go on to future lives, through storage or re-use
3. Reduce the number of vehicles on tour to 2
4. At least 30% of technical equipment should be procured locally to venues
The baseline standard will be included in design and production team call outs, reflected in contracts and added to the agenda for project meetings. We will also hold a whole team Environmental Responsibility planning meeting before the project starts to ensure everyone is on board, led by the producer who will be the Sustainability Champion for the project. This work is reflected in the budget and timeline through…
We have Registered for Julie’s Bicycle Creative Green Tools so we can measure the carbon impact of travel on the tour (performers, set and crew). We will record this throughout the tour to provide a benchmark, allowing us to set improvement targets in future and make decisions about how we offset this. To keep emissions low we will:
- Plan the tour to use public transport wherever possible
- Work with the designer to ensure the set can fit in a smaller van, reducing fuel consumption
- Plan deliveries and set collection and storage to minimise unnecessary trips by the production team
- Include travel planning and environmental sustainability in each production meeting
As part of our organisational development work we will create an environmental responsibility policy and plan. This will be devised by board and staff, with support from climate justice activist RX and Dean Rowland, a carbon literacy trainer. We will identify key areas of data collection and develop SMART targets which we will begin work on during this project and will continue to develop going forward. This will include:
- Benchmarking and reducing the carbon impact of staff travel- with a % reduction to be agreed with Dean
- Reducing our office energy use, including switching suppliers to one which offers 100% renewables
